Valve springs are under tremendous pressure when installed, making improper removal dangerous. Additionally, theinstallation of valve springs without a valve spring compressor is almost impossible. Therefore, the use of a valve spring compressor is essential to thespeedy and safe installation and removal of valve springs.
.If using a valve spring compressor to remove the valve springs from an already assembled cylinder head, first lay the cylinder head on its side.
.Use the valve spring compressor by placing the U-shaped portion over the valve spring retainer and the screw on the cylinder head to compress the spring.
.While the spring is compressed, remove the value keepers and retainers.
.Slowly release the compressor and remove the valve.
.To use a valve spring compressor to installvalve springs, first place the spring over the valve stem.
.Install the valve retainer over the spring.
.Use the valve spring compressor in the same manner as was used to remove the spring, but instead compress the spring down the valve stem and install the valve keepers on either side of the valve.
.Once the valve keepers are securely in place, remove the valve spring compressor.
