Confirm the Exact Transmission Procedure
Identify the transmission model and consult its service information before disassembly. Bearing covers, snap rings, spacers, and shaft movement requirements differ between designs. The tool and sequence must match the actual gearbox, not a visually similar unit.
Prepare and Secure the Work Area
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle only when required by the approved procedure.
- Mount the unit on a stable stand or fixture that supports its weight.
- Clean the front bearing area so retainers and puller contact surfaces are visible.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment and keep bystanders away from the line of force.
Release Covers, Seals, and Retainers
Remove the front cover, shipping seal, snap ring, or other retaining devices only as directed by the service procedure. Confirm that all retention features are released before attempting to pull the bearing. Forcing a retained bearing can damage the case, shaft, or puller.

Select the Correct Input Bearing Tool

Align the Puller and Support Point
Position the puller so its force acts directly along the input shaft centerline. The center screw or ram should bear on a suitable support point, while the jaws or attachment engage the correct bearing surface. Recheck alignment from more than one angle before applying force.
Remove the Bearing with Controlled Force
- Apply light force and verify the puller remains seated.
- Watch for even movement between the bearing, shaft, and case.
- Pause if resistance increases unexpectedly or any part starts to tilt.
- Support the shaft or removed component as it releases.
- Keep related spacers and retainers organized for inspection.

Know When to Stop
Stop immediately if the puller slips, the case flexes, the bearing does not move as expected, or the tool begins to side-load the shaft. Recheck for an overlooked snap ring, incorrect attachment, inadequate clearance, or a procedure that requires a different extractor or fixture.
Inspect Before Reassembly
Inspect the input shaft, bearing seat, case bore, seal land, and removed bearing for wear, fretting, discoloration, or scoring. Clean the mating surfaces and follow the approved installation process for the replacement bearing, including the correct driver or press support.
